The exquisite temple of Segesta baffles period experts for it is not known to this day to which deity this main temple was dedicated.

"The Doric building (430 BCE), pure and graceful, is girt by a peristyle of 36 columns in golden-coloured limestone."

I arrived at Segesta towards the end of my trip around the island of Sicily. The weather was perfect and, unlike the earlier days of that week, I needed a light sweater at the top of the hill that overlooked the main temple and Greek theater. By far, these were the most beautifully situated ruins of my trip. The puffy white clouds gliding over the ancient farmland below made for some spectacular views.

"This Hellenistic theater (63 meters in diameter) is built into the rocky hillside. The tiers of the seats are oriented towards the hills, behind which, to the right, is the Gulf of Castellammare."
