The Town of Herculaneum, very much as it must have appeared in 79 CE before Vesuvius
erupted covering the town in mud and pushing the shore of this once seaside resort one
kilometer further west.
"Herculaneum was founded, according to tradition, by Hercules. The town has various examples of different types of dwellings, all of which were overwhelmed by the sea of mud which seeped into every nook. The particular interest of a visit to Herculaneum is that all timber structures (frameworks, beams, doors, stairs and partitions) were preserved by a hard shell of solidified mud, whereas at Pompeii they were consumed by fire."
The inner courtyard of a home in Herculaneum decorated with images of Poseidon (see detail below).
My favorite spot in this town was the perfectly intact women's baths. Lying there on a bench for a quick nap to escape the overwhelming heat, I dreamt of the good life two thousand years ago in this bustling seaside town.
